[BUT-14] Move on up to the
bandstand folks and get ready to behold the undeniable groove of the ambassadors
of instrumental soul The Diplomats of Solid Sound. Tune into the hard
stepping funky action of these dancefloor scientists. Originally derived
from the primordial ooze of Booker T and the MG's and the lounge surf
of The Ventures the Diplomats armed with a handful of originals and a
batch of choice covers played parties, opening slots, and small clubs.
Started in late 1998 as a side project for garage rockers The Bent Scepters
Dustin Conner (bass), Doug Roberson (guitar), Jim Viner (drums), and original
organist Pat White assembled the key components that would be used to
attain the Diplomats trademark sound. A skintight rhythm section, simple
but effective guitar figures and interstellar soulful organ. After the
demise of The Bent Scepters in Nov. of '99 the Diplomats tapped keyboardist
extraordinare Nate "Count" Basinger to fill the organ void.
A handful of rehearsals later the Diplomats found their sound had grown
ten-fold. With the exceptional playing of the "Count" the Diplomats
added to the potent mix elements of The Meters and James Brown funk, Blaxplotation
soundscapes and classic blue note jazz groove. Live sets include originals,
classy standards, soul shouters, and laid back infectious grooves. |

[BUT-10]
Instrumental quintet The Gene Drayton Unit have been setting London stages
alight during 2001 and are set to release their first record in January
2002, a three-track single on Butterfly Records out of Barcelona. Take equal parts of jazz, soul, and vintage R&B, add a twist of 60s punk and stir it all up with a Leslie cabinet and you are getting close to the GDU sound. Asking the boys for their influences is starting a real long conversation, since they are all music fanatics with immense record collections. The obvious ones such as Stax Records, Junior Walker and Jack McDuff will crop up straight away, but you are just as likely to hear mentions of Thelonious Monk, Iggy Pop, Television and Captain Beefheart. But ultimately it's the heartfelt sound of the cellar, of the dancefloor and of rhythm and soul that comes through when you hear the GDU play. The Gene Drayton Unit are key UK members of the current "Hammond band" scene along with The New Mastersounds, the ubiquitous James Taylor Quartet (JTQ) and well-travelled US outfits The Nick Rossi Set from San Francisco and New York's Sugarman 3. But the GDU have eschewed the current trend for funk and are instead firmly rooted in the earthy R&B sound of the mid-1960s. For want of a better term, some call it "Mod Jazz", but it's really just top-notch music. The tracklisting of The Gene Drayton Unit single is:
Distribution is through Clear Spot (Europe) and Get Hip (US), mailorder from Butterfly Records website http://www.butterfly-records.com and at better UK record stores. SOLD OUT! |

[BUT-09] The Helmut Stein Experience is the soundtrack to a look into the darker elements of the human condition. Mixing elements of Jazz, Blues, Deep Soul and Pop, the music screams as well as soothes. It's late night into early morning music for a restless soul. Keyboardist/composer R. Scott (ex 00 Soul and Redd Foxx BBQ producer) has written a song cycle about situations both real and imagined. The music aches with loss and regignation as the lyrics tell stories of characters torn between right and wrong.
Phil Golla adds smoky shades of sax and clarinet to the brooding landcape. His intrumental prowess allows bursts of expressive soloing and lulling melodic accompaniment.
The rhythm section of Brad Wilson (drums) and Jason Hilliker (bass) keeps the music contemporary while employing classic elements from the great soul era. It's a sublime balance of past and present.Melinda Jones takes the spotlight, as well as provides support, with vocals as haunting as the voice a fallen angel. She's the perfect focal point and complement for the Experience. |

[BUT-08] The Waistcoats are the worldwide ambassadors of 'Nederbeat', with 3 albums and several singles
released, and shows played all over the world.
The Waistcoats Live @ KUT is their first record to show their awesome nederbeat power live in
concert. Expect wailing harmonica, groovy organ, raw guitar chords and a thumping beat.
The EP was recorded live on air at KUT 90.5 FM Radio, Austin, Texas, in March 2001, and
contains 3 Waistcoats originals and 1 cover. The songs are:
That's your problem. A cover of the Outsiders, probably the best dutch 60s beat group. On most
of their records the Waistcoats pay tribute to their nederbeat forefathers by covering 1 dutch
60s beat song.
What's in it for me. A mod riff song with a catchy chorus. |

[BUT-07] "Buffalo Bates" is the second single by The Dilemmas to be released by the Barcelona's Butterfly Records. File it under "Instant Pop Classic", because that's what it is for sure. In a parallel universe, such a catchy, summery, brightly-colored production would be a Top 20 hit: as it is, this limited-edition release of 500 copies on glorious yellow vinyl will be a record which in future will be sought-after by collectors when "digging for gold". "Buffalo Bates" was recorded in London, England in late 2000. The Dilemmas on that occasion contained the following ingredients, in varying amounts: Andy Maidment: guitar & vocals, Andy Spam: keyboards, Phil Clark: Fender bass and Lady Croxington Green: drums & backing vocals. Two tracks from the band's considerable archive make up the B-side: "Fahrenheit", from 1996, and the jokey instrumental "Sure To Fail" recorded way back in September 1988. Some of these Dilemmas play on those tunes as well. These boys have got longevity, ya dig. |

[BUT-05] The Tyme Society were a strongly sixties - oriented combo with strong
garage & folk psych influences, fronted by Massimo del Pozzo (the
Others, Misty Lane fanzine). They grab inspiration from american garage
beat and the melanchonic sound of New England bands and East Coast americana
with a hint of dutch folk beat psych. They have a debut ep out on Psych
Out Records and have included one song in the EXPO 2000 ep witch include
also tracks of the Chocolate Watchband, the Thanes and the Rookies. |

[BUT-04] The Dilemmas are a quartet from London UK playing energetic guitar pop with a distinct retro feel, top-notch tunes and a big fat Hammond organ pasted on the top. The band has played together sporadically since the late 1980s and in 1999, following a particularly strenuous night at an East London hostelry, original members Andy Maidment and Phil Clark put together a new version of the band to play a few shows on the London garage-rock circuit. Reaction was good, so, drafting in keyboard player Andy Lambert and borrowing another band's drummer for the day, studio time was booked at the famously all-analog Toe Rag recording studio and the results are right here on this limited-edition vinyl-only release from Barcelona's Butterfly Rds. This is The Dilemmas IN COLOR EP. SOLD OUT! |

[BUT-03] The Keepers are a new band cast from a vintage rock 'n' roll mould. Formed around March 2000 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, band members - Hugh, Bob, Willy & Norm have played in various bands such as Thee Dreggs, The Cinnamon Firm and The Blairmaynes. Their influences are rooted in garage, mod, psychedelia and R&B. Rekindling the lost energy and vibrancy of the 60's with buoyancy and attitude. Reinventing the wheel is not where they're at but they are forward thinkers, experimentalists, dabbling in the rudiments of rock and the science of soul. Their live show is a rollercoaster white knuckle ride fuelled by an infectious groove and driven by a rage of emotions. They'll assault your senses and leave you reeling! Stop Pretending is The Keepers first single release. The song has already hit the number one spot on MP3.com's Mod and Britpop charts. |
